The periodical The Antillean Navigator exists since 1987, when a special paper was published under the name “The Regatta Paper” in order to attract more participants for the third regatta from Curaçao to Venezuela.

These regattas were great events during 15 years, starting in 1981 and attracted many boaters. Under the guidance of the Venezuelan Coast Guard and the Royal Netherlands Air Force there were never incidents.

After publication of this special first issue, many readers requested the paper to become a periodical and this happened under the name The Antillean Navigator. The paper played a mayor role in assisting to develop CITRO (Citizens Rescue Organization), the volunteer Coast Guard of Curaçao, which is now a prestigious institution under the patronage of His Excellency the Governor of the Netherlands Antilles.

The main purpose of the paper is to inform the readers about the dependence of Curaçao of the island’s international connections by air, sea and telecommunications. There are also articles about history, nature, climate and modern local and international developments. Great care is being exercised for the correctness of the contents of the articles and on purpose the following – often emotionally laden. Issues like politics, trade unions and religion are being left out.

At present the paper has 32 pages of tabloid format, of which 16 are color pages. Effective January 2008 the number of color pages will be increased to 24. It is the aim of the editor-in-chief to publish three issues annually. This modest number is the consequence of extensive research in order to find subjects of special interest. The circulation is 14,000 copies, of which 10,000 are being distributed in the high income neighborhoods of Curaçao and 3,500 via about 130 distribution points like libraries and other places where public do their shopping. There are also copies of the paper in a local airline and several hundreds of the Antillean Navigator are being exported to Surinam, the Netherlands and Bonaire. Via the new web site http://www.seawingsnv.com/ the number of readers (especially abroad) will increase dramatically and the web site will be made known via various available channels.

Readers, who have knowledge of possible interesting events and histories are encouraged to take contact with the editor-in-chief via Navigator@scarlet.an.

We trust that our readers will appreciate the contents of the paper.

John Martin Kooijman,

Editor-in-chief and publisher.
